How to share your location on iPhone and Android: 4 easy ways
Updated:
In short: to share your location once, use WhatsApp live location or Google Maps location sharing; both work on iPhone and Android. Between iPhones, Find My is even simpler. For ongoing sharing within the family, with alerts, use Heri.
1. Google Maps (iPhone and Android)
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture in the top corner.
- Choose Location sharing → New share.
- Pick how long (for example 1 hour, or until you turn it off) and who to share with.
2. Find My (between iPhones)
- Open the Find My app and choose People.
- Tap Share My Location and choose a contact.
- Choose 1 hour, until end of day, or indefinitely.
Family members in Family Sharing see each other in Find My automatically when sharing is on.
3. WhatsApp live location
- Open a chat and tap the attach button (📎 or +).
- Choose Location → Share live location.
- Pick 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours.
4. Heri: ongoing sharing for the family
The ways above are fine for a one-off, but they can't tell you when your child gets to school, and they don't keep a history. In Heri the whole family is on one map, place alerts arrive automatically, and on Prime you can see 30 days of routes. To show your location to someone outside the family, Heri makes a temporary link that opens in a browser and stops working when it expires. How child location tracking works in Heri.
Frequently asked questions
Can I share my location from an iPhone to an Android phone?
Yes. Google Maps, WhatsApp and Heri sharing work on both. Find My works only between Apple devices.
How do I see who I'm sharing my location with?
In Google Maps tap your picture → Location sharing; on iPhone open Find My → People. You can stop sharing from the same screen.
Can I find someone's location without their permission?
No, and you shouldn't try. People share their location themselves. Hidden tracking software breaks the law, and apps promising to "locate any phone by number" are usually scams.
